I have spent the majority of 2009 in the great state of Texas, traveling around as both a racer and fan. This is a big state and there are a lot of tracks to cover, so I'm sure it will remain "Texas in 2010" and perhaps beyond. I began my tour of Texas by visiting Corpus Christi Speedway for the last race of 2008. From there it was on to Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle [South of Austin] where I spent the largest part of the season, with stops at Houston Motorsports Park, Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, I-37 Raceway South of San Antonio, back to Corpus, make those rounds again, etc. When all was said and done and the '09 season came to a close, it seems that the most interesting and marketable racers I found were firmly rooted in the Texas Super Racing Series in both the Allison Legacy and Late Model divisions. Yet I know Texas has a lot more to offer and I plan to continue visiting other tracks and series in the future. I have had the pleasure of meeting some incredible members of the racing community. Track owners/promoters like Thunderhill's Mary Ann Naumann and her terrific and supportive husband H Naumann, who is a great racer in his own right. Red River's Hank Cournoyer and Houston's John Mandabach who put in tireless efforts to keep short track racing vibrant and alive. Drivers like Charles Aikin Jr., Layton Carroll and James Huff who are always a pleasure to see. Racing PR Director Debbie Williams, who is always on top of things and I'm pretty sure never sleeps. Technical Director Jack Sandefur who does double, triple, quadruple duty at Texas racing events. Track Manager David Mackey. Texas Pro Sedan series show runners Jack Foy and Richard Adams and their boss, the legendary Race Diretor Neil Upchurch, from whom I have learned so much this year. Racing familes like the Stapps, Spreens and Runcos. You have all enriched my experience in the Texas racing community. Jerry Spencer, track photographer Jeff Garvin, etc. The list goes on. Wow. I can't belive how many cool people I have met in one season. Ozzy, Mike McCain [and Josh, of course]. I really need to stop now. LOL But not before I give kudos to Mike and Charysse Knotts. What can any of us say but "Thank You". Okay... I have gotten off target. This section was meant to simply say that I have already found an abundance of talent in the Texas racing community and only wish I could give propper KUDOS to everyone who deserves it. On a personal note, Aaricka and the kids are doing fine back in California. Kody [my dog] has joined me on this journey and is still going strong after nearly 14 years. Mom is recovering nicely following extensive surgery. My deepest thanks to all in the racing community who have offered well wishes and prayers. She is doing well. Now it's on to 2010. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to "start your engines". - Tory C
